Everything you need to know before packing your bags for Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Yes, travelers from most countries require a single-entry tourist visa ($50 USD for most nationalities, $100 USD for US passport holders). You can easily obtain your visa online through the official Tanzania Immigration e-Visa system or at major points of entry such as Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR).
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if you are traveling from or transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country for more than 12 hours. Antimalarial medication (such as Malarone or Doxycycline) is strongly advised. Consult your local travel clinic 4-6 weeks prior to travel.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral earth tones (khaki, tan, olive). Avoid bright colors, dark blue, and black which attract tsetse flies. Evenings and early mornings in Ngorongoro can get chilly, so pack a fleece jacket or warm windbreaker.
Tipping is customary and deeply appreciated. For your private safari guide, a standard guideline is $20-$30 USD per vehicle per day. For safari lodge staff, $10-$15 USD per day placed in the communal tip box is customary. Tips can be paid in USD or Tanzanian Shillings (TZS).
